It is cliche' and not what we would have named the boat if we has a boat with no name, but there is so much history and soul to this boat, and Sundowner is her name. Really nice blog

"Aquaholic" has always been a favorite of mine, but Trophy Wife feels it's just too sterotypically a power boat name. Miss Behavin and 2nd Wind are the names of boats in my current racing fleet and they are always beating me. So I don't like those names at all!

Our boat's name is Sundowner, which has been her name since the previous owners acquired her in 1978. They lived on her for nearly 30 years and sailed Sundowner around the globe 3 times.

It is cliche' and not what we would have named the boat if we has a boat with no name, but there is so much history and soul to this boat, and Sundowner is her name.

I love the name. The boat has taken on a life of it's own. Amazing how some boats can do that.

I have been remiss in not responding to your posts earlier. I feel I am beginning to know your family, and I share your passion for sailing. We enjoy winter, but your blog page has been keeping me going as I look forward to getting up to our boat on Lake Huron this spring.

A good overview, but I would contend that the Maritimes have plenty of technical help past Quebec City, but that it's just orientated toward the fishing fleets. Certainly by PEI/Cape Breton Island, there is plenty of places to get things fixed. The north side of the river past Quebec City does get a little wild, however.

Loved your video! What program did you use to make your movie? You are doing it right by taking your family with you while your kids are young. They grow up so fast and will always remember their sailing journey. We sail out of Bayfield Ontario on the other side of Lake Huron and plan to head north to the North Channel this summer. We'll be entering from the east end.

I admire Laura's efforts. We first met her in the San Blas islands, then again in Panama. I take my hat off to her for the circumnavigation, but I also think there's no way I'd let me daughter sail alone around the world when she's 15.

Nice thoughts! We're just now embarking on this adventure process of sailing with our five daughters. We don't have a boat or money or anything right now, but we're getting started on the process for when that day finally arrives. I look forward to reading more. Given the age of Irwin 28's, making a passage from Florida to Cuba/Bahamas will be more dependent on condition and the competence/preparedness of the captain and crew rather than the design of any one specific vessel. Having said that, I believe a properly prepared and maintained I28 would have no probably making either passage in light to moderate conditions. While she’s a good design, I would want a reliable weather window for crossing the Gulf Stream. If I were making a passage like this aboard an I28, I’d add locking mechanisms to the cockpit lazarettes to ensure they stay closed if the boat were to roll or get pooped. Also, replace the factory gate valves with proper seacocks.
